“For this holiday of Thanksgiving, remember that you really do have something to be thankful for, and don’t you forget it.”

A table set for Thanksgiving dinnerWhat do we have to be thankful for? When you honestly think about it, the average American lives a rather pampered life. We have a roof over our head, we know that we’re going to get to eat every day, and we have all kinds of luxuries like fancy furniture, expensive car stereos, etc. And it really is something to be thankful for, even though so many people take it for granted. When I went to Pittsburgh in October and worked with people in different situations from my own, I realized exactly how pampered I am. I may complain about driving a 1991 Toyota Previa, which is getting to the point where it needs to be put out of its misery, but these people we worked with would love to have my car. We worked with people who had everything they owned in a shopping cart. No roof over their head. No guarantee of even a single meal in their day, let alone the oft-spoken “three square meals”. Some people were recovering from very bad situations, and trying to start a new life. Others could not afford their own dietary staples. It really does make you think about the stuff that you take for granted, and take a moment and be thankful for it. A roof over the head, and a wonderful meal like that pictured at right. I’m thankful to have that when others are not so fortunate to have it.
