Frequently Asked Questions

Before contacting me, please give this a read.  If your query is already answered below, you may not receive a reply to your message.  Questions relating to specific subsidiary sites are answered beneath the main section.

Is it possible for you to add a certain product to your Online Store?

If you are suggesting a new design to go on shirts, shorts, hats, or some other product style that is already offered in my store, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do via my Online Store provider, CafePress.  If you are suggesting a new kind of product that is not offered in CafePress’s product portfolio, you may wish to contact CafePress directly to suggest that they include the product that you want in their offerings.

May I use material from your site in other projects, either elsewhere on the Web or otherwise?

See Content Reuse for more detailed information on reusing content from The Schumin Web.

How do you select the images for the photo feature on the main page?

I choose the images by digging through my collection of photos and picking one out.  If I’ve just taken a bunch of new photos, I’m likely to use one from that new set in that space.  I’ll also choose images for sentimental value (anniversaries and such), and ones that strike me as being main-page quality.  The caption is specific, brief, and attempts to maintain a neutral point of view.  The date listed reflects the day that the photograph was taken.

I’d like to suggest something for a future photography set!

And I would like to hear it!  I’m always open to ideas for new photography sets, and a number of individuals’ ideas have turned into finished sets.  I cannot fulfill every request, but I’ll see what I can do.  Most photography sets I have done are within my one-day travel limit (i.e. where I can return home same-day and don’t have to book a hotel room), and it’s significantly less likely that my doing a set outside this range will be feasible.  I am currently based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s northern suburbs, so areas within a reasonable drive from there are far more likely to be feasible than those beyond that area.

Why did you take pictures of your Walmart trip?

The reason the Walmart photos were taken was because it was a way to become familiar with my first digital camera, a Sony Mavica FD73.  Besides that, my family needed to get some stuff at Walmart anyway.  It also just so happened  that I had taken enough photos (51 total) that I could do something substantial with the set, and so I published them on the site, thinking, why not?  This was also the genesis of the Photography section, though the Walmart photo set itself is now part of Life and Times.

How did you get up to the cupola of Wilson Hall at JMU to take photos?

I contacted the building coordinator for Wilson Hall several weeks in advance and made an appointment to go see the cupola.

Will you please trade links with me?

I do not “trade links” on The Schumin Web.  External links on The Schumin Web are chosen by me, and are generally placed directly in the text of a Web page to supplement information already presented at my discretion.  My site is not designed to contain a “links” page, and I will not place other Web sites’ links or banners on my site unless I decide to, on my own, for reasons related to my own site’s content.  Additionally, I’ve found that people who ask for link trades usually don’t have any content on their own sites worth linking to anyway.  Good content draws links to itself with little effort on the part of its creator.

May I link to your site?

Go for it!  In order to ensure that your link remains accurate even if I change stuff around (which I’ve been known to do from time to time), I’d recommend that you link the Main Page, or to the main pages for my subsidiary sites if that’s what you’re interested in.  If you want to link to an internal page, feel free, but be warned that the URLs for specific pages are subject to change without advance notice as the site continues to grow and develop.  In other words, things occasionally get rearranged, so link internally at your own risk.

When did you start The Schumin Web?

The Schumin Web began on March 23, 1996.

Do you run any other Web sites besides The Schumin Web?

Currently, I do not run any Web sites outside of my Schumin Web system.

Questions specific to College Life

When did you attend James Madison University?

I attended James Madison University from August 1999 to December 2003, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration.

I see someone I know in your photos!  How do I get in contact with them?

More than likely, I do not have current contact information for the people you are referring to.  You would most likely be best served searching for their name on Facebook.

Why are there so few photos from your freshman year?

I did not have a digital camera my freshman year in college.  Back then, I improvised as well as I could.  I used a clunky old 1980s-style camcorder along with a device that captures still images for the computer, and I also scanned in conventional photos.  Both of these made picture-taking somewhat cumbersome, which is reflected in the amount of photos from that year.  I got my first digital camera the following summer.

Questions specific to The Schumin Web Transit Center

Why don’t you have any pictures of [whatever]?

Most likely, it’s just because I’ve not been able to get around to photographing it.  I’ll generally photograph just about anything transit-related, so it’s just a matter of getting to the place to photograph it, which based on schedules, is sometimes more difficult than I would like.  But if you want me to photograph it, I will definitely try within reason (i.e. I’m not going up to Boston just to railfan, but I would certainly take MBTA photos while I’m up there for something else).

I’d like to make a suggestion about service changes for…

I do not work for any transit agency, nor is my site affiliated with any transit agency.  For information about the day-to-day operations of the transit agencies shown, the Related Web Sites page has links to the official Web sites for various transit agencies.

Is it legal to photograph on mass transit systems?

Generally speaking, yes.  Mind you, I have had confrontations about photography before.  A list of various transit agencies’ regulations for amateur photography is available at nycsubway.org.  And contrary to what some people will tell you, you are not aiding terrorists, nor are you a terrorist yourself, by photographing things, mass transit or otherwise.  In most cases, it is 100% legal to take photos of public transportation.
