On February 8, 2003, I began shooting new material again for the Photography section (called "Photo Essays" until summer 2003). I started with a trip to Washington DC, and what a snowy day it was! But with the snow, and the trip around, I had a new tool at my disposal - movies! On this particular day, and all the photo shoot days that followed, I managed to take a bunch of movies. One fun thing about that is getting a bit of a running commentary, thus hearing what I'm thinking on these photo days. Some movies I made genuine mistakes on. Some movies are train movies, because I'm a bit of a subway enthusiast.
This page is an anomaly as Schumin Web sets go. If such a page were created today, it would be part of Life and Times, or even the Journal. However, since it was created before those sections were initiated in 2003, it was placed in Photography (then "Photo Essays"). That also explains why this set ends in April - new material was placed in Life and Times once that section began.
From the White House and Union Station day...
I set the camera up on my tripod, and attempt to describe what's going on today in some coherent sort of form.
A Breda train on the Green Line leaves the L'Enfant Plaza station...
I board a CAF train at L'Enfant Plaza on my way to the Gallery Place-Chinatown station.
The train operator has such a time trying to close the doors at the Gallery Place-Chinatown station to need to announce, "Attention, customers, at the sound of the chime, please do not continue to board the train..."
From the Protest day...
Now you see why I gave this to you as an MP3 in the actual Protest Movies page. Without realizing it at the time, I shot the entire movie sideways.
A quick video of Arianna and Linda, two friends from JMU.
Another case of why-I-only-gave-you-audio right here, as I managed to shoot it sideways...
Finished with Freedom Plaza, and now back to the Metro to break, and then head the group off on their route.
On an open-air skywalk over Fort Myer Drive in Rosslyn. A number of movies were made while I was essentially killing time waiting for the protesters to get somewhere on their march.
"It's not shorts weather. I'm wearing jeans, as you can see. Don't I look sexy?"
Back into Rosslyn station...
"You made it!"
Walking up Eye Street, looking for protesters.
I didn't find any! How disappointing. Turns out, though, that I was WAY too early, and a little too ahead of the game.
Now, the protest is over, and I'm back at Rosslyn Center, reflecting on the experience, and having a Pepsi. One thing to note, though. I thought at the time that a rather loud "boom" sound that showed up on a video was a tear gas canister or something, but upon discussion with Linda and Arianna, and all of us listening to the sound, it turned out to be a motorcycle sound, and perfectly harmless.
