Urban DemolitionIn early 2005, 1117 North 19th Street, originally constructed in 1964, was demolished to make way for Waterview, a mixed-use high-rise development spearheaded by The JBG Companies and Trizec Properties. According to JBG's Web site, Waterview is expected to be complete in 2007. On February 9, 2005, with demolition well underway, I walked by with Big Mavica in hand to document the project.
Before getting into the demolition photos, however, I have two file photos from May 2004 taken northeast of the structure, well before demolition began. 1117 North 19th Street is the brown-and-white 12-story modernist building slightly to the left of the center of the photo, next to the taller RCA Building.
In another file photo, taken in the early morning of January 20, 2005 from nearby Rosslyn Center, demolition is underway as a portion of the exterior curtain wall has already been removed.
And now, on February 9, most of the exterior curtain wall is gone, and the interior has been removed. Let's go exploring!
Approaching the intersection of 19th and Lynn Streets, we find a skeleton of reinforced concrete surrounded by fences.
The exterior curtain wall is nearly gone, with only a few fragments here and there remaining.
A crane stands nearby, ready to remove pieces of the building.
The interesting thing about the demolition of a building like this is the opportunity to see how these buildings are constructed.
Looking inside, elevator shaft openings around the building's concrete core have been boarded up, and the underside of the floor slabs are clearly visible.
Some elements of the building are still recognizable, such as the canopy over the former entrance marked with "1117".
Parked along Lynn Street, a truck waits ready to haul off debris.
On the other side of the building, a pile of debris waits to be hauled off.
Along the perimeter fence hang banners for Trizec and The JBG Companies.
Across the street, the 24-story building at 1801 North Lynn Street stands tall, completed in 2002.
