Alexandria Waterfront
This photo set also marked the beginning of The Schumin Web Photo Essay Blitz 2003, which was a week-long series of photography shoots all over the Commonwealth of Virginia and Washington DC, where I managed to photograph so much... When I first got over to the waterfront, my first reaction was "Oh, no!" I had not expected for the waterfront docks to be under renovation on the shoot date (March 8, 2003), and I was afraid that all I would be able to see would be renovation... Thankfully, though, it turned out that the renovations only affected a small area of the waterfront, and so on with the show! Near the shoreline, there were a LOT of floating bits of wood, which almost gave the appearance of a surface, floating on top of the water. The ducks had no problem working with it, swimming through thinner parts of it, and climbing over the thicker parts. Out a little further, it's absolutely gorgeous, with items in place to keep boats going where they need to... There are also plenty of birds all around... And more birds landing all the time. Meanwhile, in the distance, one can catch a glimpse of Washington DC. The waterfront at Alexandria is not only a place for boats, but also a place for families, as we watch this family feed the ducks that have gathered. The docks themselves are wooden, and look somewhat aged, and are speckled with bird poop, so watch your step. All in all, the waterfront is an absolutely wonderful place! One nice feature is the presence of wooden gazebos along some of the docks, allowing one an opportunity to stop and ponder... Beyond another of these gazebos are some of the restaurants at the waterfront, most notably Chart House. Further along the Potomac's banks, people can be found enjoying the absolutely wonderful day... One point to note... no fishing, please! Lovely, isn't it? Along the waterfront, there are also a number of boats for quick pleasure cruises. This boat is called the Cherry Blossom. The Alexandria Waterfront is also home to quite a few private boats as well... |
