Roanoke City Market

Not many cities still have a "marketplace", where people go to buy and sell stuff, in the traditional sense of the word.  Nowadays, with the Wal-Marts and the Food Lions out in force, and shopping centers everywhere, a traditional marketplace like Roanoke's is becoming increasingly hard to find.  Here, local merchants go to sell fruits, vegetables, crafts, and other odds and ends, and the citizens of Roanoke go to buy the goods provided there.  It's really neat, and it does very well, too.

So now, come with me as we visit Roanoke's marketplace, and witness commerce in the traditional sense in action.

Right here at the corner of Kirk Avenue and Market Street, come and see!

The Roanoke City Market is a busy place, indeed, with fruits, vegetables, plants - you name it - being sold every day.

This is the place to check the freshness of the fruits, and of course, thump the melons.

Additionally, get your tomatoes, potatoes, and cucumbers.  Lots of good healthy vitamins.

Down the way, from the fruits and vegetables, enjoy flower arrangements.

Protecting customers and shopkeepers alike from both the rain and sun, is this festive yellow-and-white awning, lending a certain special character to the marketplace.

Even further down, copper sculptures take your breath away - want one?

And of course, every room needs at least something green in it, besides the mold on four-week-old bread.  Buy a plant!

Buy a candle!  One of a kind!

Although it was raining as well as early on this particular day, thus attendance was somewhat down, the marketplace was still a happening place.

Everyone here has their sign and registration number, and an assigned spot.

Along the marketplace, restaurants and stores line the buildings' first floors, perfectly complementing the marketplace's style of the historic and the modern.

However, it wasn't completely full on this day - perhaps it's because of the rain?
