Splash Page Archives

When I redesigned the site in 2002 to the "Minimalist" design, I also redesigned the splash page, which is the first page you see when entering the site. Prior to August 2002, the splash page simply contained the logo (in large size) and the URL, with an invitation to click to enter. With the redesign, the splash page reduced the size of the logo, and added a picture of me, which I changed monthly. This continues to be the splash page design today, with only minor changes since.

Since August 2002, I have run many photos in that space, with "whatever I find interesting" being the guideline. Here they are, and I hope you find these photos interesting, too...

	August 2002 James Madison University, on the Quad. Notes: None
	September 2002 RA duty, and reading a book. Notes: None
	October 2002 Yeeek! Spider! Notes: This spider was actually hung from the ceiling with phone cord (the phone cord was out of frame). The googly eyes were made of paper and taped to the front of the spider.
	November 2002 Outside Pentagon City Mall in Arlington. Notes: None
	December 2002 Unpacking a coffee table for Christmas. Notes: This was originally designed to be a "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" parody, which was later dropped.
	January 2003 Fire drill! Notes: None
	February 2003 James Madison and I… Notes: This photo tied into the theme of the February 2, 2003 quote.
	March 2003 Reading the Bible at LPCM… Notes: None
	April 2003 Silliness during May 2002. Notes: None
	May 2003 Last Potomac picture Notes: This picture was taken in Potomac Hall in recognition of the fact that my Potomac Hall days were about to come to an end.
	June 2003 Rain. Notes: In May and June of 2003, we had so much rain that it was almost unbelievable. As a result, I found it quite appropriate to pose under my umbrella in the rain.
	July 2003 In the garden at home. Notes: None
	August/September 2003 Riding the Metro in Washington DC, on board Breda 2008. Notes: Since this photo was taken in August 2003, Breda 2008 has been rehabilitated. The Metro station visible through the window is Virginia Square-GMU.
	October 2003 Posing with a fiber-optic pumpkin… Notes: None
	November 2003 Moving a dresser at Sojourner House in Pittsburgh. Notes: Practically everyone who looked at this picture said it looked like I was moving a lot more than just the dresser, if you get my drift. But it was indeed totally innocent.
	December 2003 Posing with a bag of "stuff" for Christmas. Notes: I think I filled the bag with towels to give it some mass. This was an unused shot from the previous year's Christmas splash page shoot.
	January 2004 Holding up the unused "WHITE" line color sign on board a Breda train at the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station. Notes: None
	February 2004 Contemplating that which is the Ugly Fruit… Notes: None
	March 2004 Smiling while wearing a set of head-boppers. Notes: None
	April 2004 Posing at the Harrisonburg Wal-Mart with a playground ball with the Wal-Mart happy face emblazoned on it. Notes: None

	August 2004 After a coworker noticed a resemblance between the "Shrek" character and myself, I created this composite image with a toy Shrek wearing my glasses, as a compare-for-yourself image. Notes: This is a reproduction of the original composite image. The original composite image run on the front of the site was lost due to technical problems.
	September 2004 Flashback photo, showing a seven-year-old version of myself riding the Casino Carousel in Asbury Park, New Jersey. A more recent photo of me is in the circular inset. Notes: The Casino Carousel is now located at Family Kingdom Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. More recent photos of the carousel are here.

	May 2008 Riding the Orange Line on the Metro in pajama pants and flip flops. Notes: This was part of a "positioning" run for an upcoming trip to Stuarts Draft. For these positioning runs, I pack the car ahead of time, and then drive to the Vienna Metro station and leave the car there overnight. Then I take Metro back to Glenmont. Then the next day, I go to work like always, and then rather than go back to Glenmont after work, I go to Vienna, pick up the car, and then leave for Stuarts Draft right from there.

	September 2008 At Metro Center, waiting for a Red Line train. Notes: As you may have guessed by the outfit, this photo was taken the same day as the June 2008 photo.

	November 2008 Making a face for the camera. Notes: I'm actually trying to imitate this expression by then-vice president Dick Cheney. You can judge for yourself about how successful I was, but I don't think I got the lip curl right.

	June 2010 Scientology "Ideal Org" uniform spoof. Notes: The background image is "Vesuvius from Portici", chosen because it's a volcano like on the cover of Dianetics. Ask a Scientologist some time about why there's a volcano on the cover of Dianetics. It's fun, because they can't talk about Xenu, the alien that threw souls into volcanoes and blew them up (seriously, they actually believe this stuff), and so they end up having to do some serious back-pedaling.
